Bartram’s Garden

This grant is for food production and education for young children living in Southwest Philadelphia. Materials purchased with the grant will be for the Children’s Garden, including native and pollinator plants, seeds, seedlings, compost, bulbs, and pine straw. The goal of the grant is to teach children where their food comes from and to encourage them to eat more healthy food. 

The Common Place / Bunny’s Garden

This grant is for food production and expanding their gardens to feed more people in this southwest Philadelphia neighborhood of Kingsessing.  Materials purchased with the grant will be for materials to build six more raised beds, soil, mulch, gloves, hand tools, and poultry netting. The goal of this grant is to increase the number of families having access to locally grown organic food.  

Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion Museum

This grant is for community enrichment and historic garden restoration in the Tulpehocken/Germantown neighborhood. Materials purchased with the grant will be additional David Austin roses, Stewartia ‘monadelpha’ tree, grape vines, mulch for the perennial beds, and spraying of existing cedar and spruce trees. The goal of this project is to maintain a place of beauty and tranquility for visitors and the community, using appropriate plantings for the historic mansion.

Face to Face

This grant is for community enrichment and food production in Germantown.  Materials purchased with the grant will be for creating 15 raised beds, seedings, hand tools, perennials, and annuals for barrel containers, and for two Sweetgum samplings to beautify the front entrance.  The goal of the grant is to create a community garden for growing heathy food, as well as enhancing the front and side of their building to make the place more welcoming.  

Fair Amount Food Forest

This grant is for food production on a 2-acre urban farm serving the community in East Fairmount Park. Materials purchased with the grant will be for creating two 200 feet trellis systems to support existing grape and berry vines.  The goal is to diversify the food offerings of the farm through larger scale grape and berry production, as well as beautifying the driveway to historic Woodford Mansion.  

Friends of Laurel Hill

This grant is for enhancing the historic landscape of Laurel Hill East Cemetery in East Falls.  Grant money will support the purchase, planting and mulching of three horticulturally significant cultivars of Saucer Magnolias in honor of Paul Meyer, former director of Morris Arboretum, who is buried in Laurel Hill. Cultivars were personally identified by him, prior to his death. The goal of the grant is to add these magnolias to Laurel Hill’s living collection of historic and sustainable plants, which also provides a beautiful public space for all to appreciate the natural beauty of the region.   Signage will acknowledge PCGCA. 

Friends of Manton Street Park

This grant is for renewing and enhancing a public pocket park, which is adjacent to a community garden in the Italian Market area of South Philadelphia.  Materials purchased will be perennial shade plants and mulch. The goal of the grant is to plant the right type of plants in what has become a shady garden due to tree growth.  

Grumblethorpe Historic House

This grant is for historic preservation and historic-food production benefiting the Germantown community.  Materials purchased with the grant will be for two vegetable beds and two flowerbeds, representing gardens of 4 generations of the Wister family. The goal of the grant is to enhance the historic landscape of the 1741 house, which serves as an oasis for the community and provides horticulture education for youth.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital

This grant is for a creative arts therapy space for the patients of the hospital located in Center City Philadelphia. Materials purchased with the grant will be tropical houseplants, annuals, perennials, pots and soil. The goal of the grant is to create a multi-sensory space for patients receiving horticulture and music therapy as part of their recover process.

Neighborhood Garden Trust (NGT)

This project will further enrich the community through the addition of 2 adjacent abandoned lots to expand the existing Pulaski Zeralda Garden in Wayne Junction/Germantown. Grant funds will be used to add soil, mulch, native plants and irrigation supplies for a 250 sq ft area.  

Norris Square Neighborhood Project /  La Paz garden

The grant for this project in Kensington will fund materials to construct new raised beds, a water catchment and irrigation system, tools and native plant material.   The goal is increased food production and a community sanctuary.

North Light Community Center

This grant is for a continuation of the 3-year educational Learn, Grow, Eat and Go curriculum project for children in Manayunk.  Funds will be used to upgrade raised beds and to replant them with native, pollinator-attracting perennials and vegetables seedlings.  The goal is to teach the basics of plant growth and life-cycle, and to harvest food to share with their families. 

Ordinarie Heroes

Grant funds will be used to build a greenhouse, raised beds and a demonstration table. In addition to building materials, a compost bin, irrigation system and gardening supplies will be purchased.  The purpose for this grant is to educate adults and youth through workshops in conjunction with the S.O.W Hope Community Garden in Hunting Park.  

Philadelphia Orchard Project (POP)

This grant will be used to install a new orchard on a vacant lot, to be maintained by Sanctuary Farm in North Philadelphia.  Besides fruit trees and shrubs, perennials, ground covers, fencing and staking materials will be purchased.  The goal of the perennials and groundcovers is to provide pollinator plants for the fruit trees. 

Sanctuary Farm

Sanctuary Farm in the Sharswood/Brewerytown community of North Philadelphia, grew over 8,000 pounds of vegetables in 2023 for the communities it serves. The funds in this proposal will be used to test and improve the soil at 5 different locations in North Philadelphia, with the goal of increasing the quantity and improving the quality of food production. 

Share Food Program

This grant applicant plans to create a pollinator garden adjacent to Nice Roots Farm, replacing a currently mowed lawn of 4,000 sq ft., in the Allegheny West neighborhood.  Funds will be used to purchase native plant seedlings, plugs, seed mixes and educational signage. The goal is to provide a habitat for pollinators, and an educational opportunity.

Smith Memorial Playground

This grant will be used to plant a variety of native woodland species along the boardwalk path from the bottom to the top of the historic Big Wooden Slide area. It will help with their application for Level 1 Arboretum status and add to their collection of native woody species on the property in East Fairmount Park.

Stenton

This grant will be used to purchase low-growing perennials, sedges and grasses to be planted around the newly finished Dinah memorial at Stenton, a National Historic Landmark, located in Germantown.   This planting will complete the meadow landscape surrounding the front entrance of the house.  

St. James School

This grant will fund a new installation of a 171 sq ft native garden, located behind a new addition to the school in the Allegheny West neighborhood. The school association is working with Leo Garden Design for a professional installation of trees, shrubs and perennials. It will serve as green, respite space for the entire community.
